Umana Petitions Police IG, NSA as Akpabio denies involvement in attempted assassination
Former Secretary to the Akwa Ibom State government, Umana Okon Umana's lawyers have petitioned the National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd); the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar and the Director-General,Department of State Services, Ita Ekpenyong on the assassination of perceived state enemies. In a letter titled: State of Insecurity in Akwa Ibom State and Threats to Lives of Political Opponents", the lawyers
detailed the attempted assisination of the Director-General of the Ibom Development Network (IDN), Sunny Udom, the murder of Albert Ukpanah and the death threat to a former member of the House of Representatives, Ekperikpe Ekpo.
The petition said: "The regular meeting point for assassination meetings have been discovered to be Monty Suites, Edet Akpan Avenue, a hotel owned by a commissioner.
"The catalogue demonstrated above is to assist in your investigation and should never be dismissed as mere hair splitting.
"It follows a familiar path of assssinations and kidnappings that preceeded the 2011 elections in Akwa Ibom State."
Meanwhile, the Akwa Ibom State Goveror, Chief Godswill Obot Akpabio, has denied involvement in the recent attempt on the life of
Chief Sunny Udom and other people perceived as enemies of the state. Briefing members of his kitchen cabinet in the Government House recently, Akpabio stated that report reaching him from the security and intelligence community in the state indicated that the incident was not a politically motivated assassination attempt but a case of armed robbery.
Commenting on Akpabio's claim, an Akwa Ibom born, Port Harcourt based criminologist asked what reports Akpabio has received from the killings in the state since he became governor and that of Engr. Albert Ukpanah, a renowned opponent of Akpabio's Senatorial ambition and Udom Emmanuel's project. "What report has he received in view of the recent influx
of assassins into the state as reported by the media?" the man querried.
According to him, if the Governor has the courage required of leadership, if he is innocent of the crimes and bloodshed that have trailed his administration, then let God vindicate him by crowning Udom Emmanuel governor, but if he is not, let God vindicate the people who have been held hostage by the Akpabios and enthrone a governor thatthe Akwa Ibom people deserve.
